Drawing on insights from more than 70 Interim CFOs across the UK and US, this report explores how private equity sponsors are increasingly deploying interim finance leaders to stabilise performance, improve financial visibility and support value creation across the investment lifecycle.
Rather than acting solely as short-term cover, today’s Interim CFOs are often brought into complex, high-pressure environments where speed, clarity and operational execution are critical. The research highlights how the role has become increasingly strategic, with Interim CFOs playing a central part in transformation initiatives, liquidity management, reporting improvement and broader commercial decision-making.
Key findings
Interim CFOs are highly experienced PE operators: Nearly half of respondents have worked as Interim CFOs for five years or more, reflecting a market made up of experienced operators familiar with private equity environments, investor expectations and performance-led operating models.
Sponsor involvement is near-universal: The overwhelming majority of respondents reported direct sponsor involvement in the hiring process, reinforcing the importance of the role within portfolio leadership structures.
Finance functions are being rebuilt in real time: 80% of respondents reported hiring into the finance function during their engagement, often reshaping teams to improve reporting, FP&A capability and cash visibility.
Engagements continue to extend: Most Interim CFOs surveyed reported contract extensions, reflecting the growing scope and strategic importance of interim finance leadership within PE-backed businesses.
The role is becoming more strategic: The report highlights how Interim CFOs are increasingly expected to align finance with the broader value creation agenda, helping shape priorities and drive commercial outcomes across the business.
